Feral Cat Psychology

There has been a war waged between those that oppose the care of feral cats and those that promote it. Is it less humane to feed the cats and promote their difficult life situation and to promote the negative side effects of having a feral cat colony living in your neighborhood, or is it less humane to avoid caring for them altogether.

The answer is somewhere in the middle. Obviously those that care for them do so with the best of intentions, and many of the people that oppose caring for them also have the best of intentions, but there has to be a middle ground. That middle ground is this - don't do either. Simply put, spay/nueter them and release them back into their community and control their food sources.

You should find plenty of information on how to control their food sources on this site in various areas, as well as the steps to take to get them nuetered/spayed. Many cities even have free spay/nueter services to accomplish this.

Whichever side of the fence you are on, both sides agree that the feral cat issue is one of high importance in the world of nuisance animals. That being said, doing something is always better than doing nothing.
